How to make a yo-yo quilt

 I am never done with decorating my home. It is always a work in progress. 

 I started another yo-yo quilt.  I like the little yo-yo quilt at the end of my bed, but it is very small. This time I am going to make a bigger yo-yo quilt.

 

A lot of quilters asked me how to make a yo-yo quilt.
 Here is a very short tutorial.
You need a big piece of quilted fabric, a solid light color will be best and yo-yos. If quilting is not your thing to do, you can ask your longarm quilter to quilt one for you.

 

I have quilted over 2,000 quilts with an edge to edge pattern (2 pennies per inch). 

 Now that you have your big piece of fabric quilted, throw the yo-yos on the quilt. I use school washable glue to glue the yo-yos on the quilt. You can use quilters glue or pins. Some yo-yos are upside down, just turn them around. If you do not like it, just move the yo-yo somewhere else.

 

I first throw all the green and blue yo-yos. You can do any color combination. There is not a right or wrong way to do this. Wait for the glue to dry.

 Sew the yo-yos on the quilt using the leftover thread from the yo-yos.

 First layer yo-yos are sewed on. Throw more yo-yos on. This time I am doing a layer of warm colors. You can add as many yo-yos as you like and stop when you think you have enough.

 Just another tip, it is best to finish the binding before you start sewing the yo-yos on. But if you are like me and can't wait to get some yo-yos on the quilt the finished binding will have to wait for later. Ta-da and you have a pretty yo-yo quilt. I used a cotton batting and can't wait to get mine done and washed. Please feel free to ask me if you need more help.

My pillows in the bedroom started to look very old. I went to Hobby Lobby and got a few yards of duck cloth and made four pillow covers. I love the texture of the fabric.

  Not only did I paint my entry way, I  made two more pillow covers

  The pillows go so well with the quilt and the new wall color. For $5 I have two "new" pillows - not bad at all.

Finished Charm Quilt

 Another small Charm quilt is washed and crinkled. I love making smaller quilts to decorate my home. I turned this area behind the staircase into a small office area. My son spray painted an old mirror with black chalkboard paint. My daughter said it looks like a flat screen TV.

 This desk was a natural wood color before I painted it white.

  I am using spraypaint with a primer.  The black chair is going to be painted in the coral color.
I have a helper named Max.

The quilt look nice with the newly painted coral chair, two metal boxes, and the blue fabric lampshade.

 I sewed the binding on the the reproduction 1930's quilt.

 A lot of hand sewing is left to do because this is a king size quilt.

 

I am making more yo-yos. It is fun to do while watching TV.

Finished Charm Quilt

 

 The best part of quilting for me is when I have a finished quilt. I just finished this cute charm pack quilt. In the picture below is the unwashed quilt which matches so well with my daughter's orange sneakers. Orange is her favorite color, I think she has three pairs of orange shoes. She is a teenager and loves her orange shoes.

 Quilt is washed and right out of the dryer. I am thrilled at how the quilt crinkled up after the first wash. This one has Hobbs 80/20 cotton batting like most of my quilts. 

 I am glad I went with a solid red binding. Love it!.

 Just for fun a few pictures of the quilts on my bed. My favorite string quilt with the yo-yo quilt at the end of the bed.

 I love this yo-yo quilt and I'm thinking of starting another one. I sewed random yo-yos on a quilted white piece of fabric. It is fun to make the yo-yos with the yo-yo maker.

Thirties 16 Patch Quilt

 Yeah, my 16 patch is quilted. I started this scrappy quilt at least two years ago and thought I'm never going to get it done. I added a few solid squares with the 30's reproduction fabric.

 I'm glad I went with a border. Now I can't wait to get the binding on.

 Another top I quilted and I love how the quilting shows up on the white fabric. I am going to keep this one for myself.

 I quilted Michelle's Cake Mix quilt. The fabric is beautiful. I made a Cake Mix quilt before for myself using a layer cake and jelly roll, but I think it will make an adorable scrappy quilt. I'm always looking for cute and fast patterns to use my stash.
